Gradus works with UK slip resistance group to make stairs safer
As a member and key contributor to the UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG), contract interiors specialist Gradus has provided valuable input into a new guide that aims to make stairs safer.
The new guide entitled “What Makes Stairs Safer?” offers an overview of the key aspects involved in creating safe internal stairs and aims to provide valuable, independent advice to anyone involved in the design, specification, construction, installation, fitting or maintenance of stairs.
The document illustrates that 20% of occupational ‘Slip Trip and Fall’ (STF) accidents occur on stairs at the rate of one every 25 minutes. As an independent organisation representing companies with an interest in floor safety, The UKSRG is committed to reducing this figure and consequently commissioned a select number of its members to produce the informative guide.
Keith Oakes, Technical Director at Gradus, commented: “As a forerunner in stair safety, Gradus was in an optimum position to help the UK Slip Resistance Group in creating the “What Makes Stairs Safer?” guide.
“Gradus has continually improved its stair edgings over five decades due to the on-going need to keep up with changing guidance andthe heightening awareness of stair safety. Our stair edgings can help reduce accidents on stairs, as well as helping to provide an ‘inclusive’ environment giving access to all building users.”

The guide identifies five fundamental features of stairs that all need to be considered when looking to improve safety, including step dimensions, stair nosings, handrails, lighting and maintenance.
